A leaf from the 1462 Fust and Schoeffer Bible
Mainz: Johannes Fust & Peter Schoeffer, 14 August 1462. A single leaf containing Numbers 18:23 - 21:13. Royal folio (399 x 298 mm). Two pages, 48 lines, double column. Type 5:118G. No visible watermark. Several pinholes visible. Ruled in brown ink. Contemporary rubrication: three 2-line initials supplied in alternating red and blue, the initials with penwork infill and extenders, chapter numbers in red or blue, headline in alternating red and blue Lombards. Condition: some faint marginal staining and dust-soiling. Foliaton (55) in modern pencil. A leaf from the first dated Bible, known as the 48-line Bible. Fust and Schoeffer's edition was preceded only by the 42-line Gutenberg Bible from Mainz, the 36-line Pfister Bible from Bamberg, and the 49-line Mentelin from Strassburg.
