BIBLE, Latin . Sacra Biblia, acri studio, ac diligentia emendata . Venice: Giolito, 1588. 2 volumes in one, 4 o. Titles within woodcut border, numerous woodcut illustrations, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. All pages within rule-borders, tables at end within woodcut architectural borders. (Title laid down, a few marginal tears and repairs, occasional light foxing or browning, light dampstaining at end.) 18th-century sheep, spine gilt (rubbed). Provenance : Michael Tomkinson, Franche Hall, Worcestershire (armorial bookplate); Lionel H. Pries (bookplate). Many of the woodcuts from this illustrated portable Bible are based on the three sets of influential cuts by Bernard Salomon Hans Holbein and Pierre Eskrich that appeared in a number of Lyonese editions of the Bible and other picture books from 1538 to 1562. (Cf. Harvard/Mortimer Italian 62, describing a 1576 folio Venetian Bible possibly sharing some of the cuts of the present edition). Adams B-1095; cf. Sander 1005 note. [ With :] Breviarium romanum, ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concilij Tridentini restitutum, Pii V. Pont Max. iussu editum . Venice: Giunta, 1572. 4 o. "Rubricae generales" in roman type, calendar and text in gothic type, title and calendar printed in red and black, headlines, headings and initial capitals printed in red throughout. Printer's red-printed woodcut device on title and at end, woodcut initials. (Occasional marginal dampstaining, minor worming to first few quires, final leaf torn along gutter). Contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin, crucifixion plaque on upper cover, plaque with arms of Holy Roman Empire on lower cover, evidence of four metal cornerpieces and two fore-edge clasps (rubbed and stained, lacking metal furniture). Provenance : contemporary marginal notes on front and back flyleaves; M.C.G.G. 1721 (inscription on title); Jo. Fr.
