Schreiber 83: "Estienne’s second 8vo edition of the Latin Bible (first in 1534), and one of which was felt to challenge conservatisme more blatantly than any of his previous editions. Robert here prints the Vulgate in parallel columns with an alternative translation: the Zürich version. This presentation of an alternative was considered an attack on the authority of the Vulgate. Furthermore, the two versions are flanked by columns of notes which, it was felt, betrayed Estienne’s own religious opinions, even though he claimed to have drawn them from lectures by the respected François Vatable. Both text and notes are printed in Estienne’s smallest type.
