BINDING FOR QUEEN ANNE OF ENGLAND. A Collection of the several Statutes, and Parts of Statutes, Now in Force, relating to High Treason, and Misprision of High Treason. London (printed by Charles Bill and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd) 1709. 12:o (152x90 mm). (4), 5-113, (1 blank), (14, table); (4), 5-44, (4, last blank) pp. Title within double frame. Contemporary black morocco, covers with double gilt frames, the inner with gilt tulips in the corners, on middle of covers the gilt coat-of-arms of Queen Anne of England, inner gilt borders, gilt edges of covers, somewhat worn and rubbed at corners, covers slightly warped, faded richly gilt spine in six compartments, slight damage at upper edge, all edges gilt. Note A Londres 1762 and signature on first endpaper of Rolf Wistrand dated 1936. Traces of removed bookplate on inside of cover. Text with slight foxing or spotting. Treason in England carried the ultimate penalty of being hanged, drawn and quartered (as well as having one's lands and goods confiscated). Perhaps because of the seriousness of the penalty, various rules and procedures were observed at Treason trials (detailed in this work) that were not observed on other charges. These mainly benefited the accused. Queen Anne of England (Anne Stuart, 1665-1714), queen of both England and Scotland in 1702, in 1707 queen of both Great Britain and Scotland, daughter of Jacob II. Married to prince Georg of Denmark. Provenance: Sten Ringselle (1949-2017), Swedish antiquarian bookdealer who in 1992 opened his shop Antiquaria in Gothenburg.
