Engraved frontispiece portrait after Cochin by St. Aubin, 9 plates after Marillier by Née. (Final plate waterstained, some marginal soiling and spotting, occasional stains to text.) Contemporary crimson morocco gilt by N.-D. Derome le Jeune with his ticket, covers with arms of the Dauphin Louis Joseph-François-Xavier (1781-1789), triple fillet border, flat spine directly lettered and with a small round tool in each compartment, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, silk marker, gilt edges (front armorial slightly tarnished, slight wear on lower cover, extremities a little rubbed and bumped, front inner hinges split). Provenance : The Dauphin (binding) -- 'Doner a madame la Baronne de Mackau la mere par M. le Dauphin. 1786' (contemporary inscription on front free endpaper) -- Mortimer L. Schiff (ex-libris, sold Sotheby's 6 December 1938, lot 1390, to:) -- J.R. Abbey (ex-libris and note of purchase, sold Sotheby's 19 June 1967, lot 1697A) -- A.L. McLaughlin (bookplate, sold Sotheby's Monaco 7 October 1980, lot 1586). The gift of the short-lived Dauphin, the book's dedicatee, with his arms on the Derome binding.
