Black Ring Binder Containing 18th and 19th Century Letters or Documents

A black ring binder containing letters or documents from 1703 to 1838, with much interesting content relating mainly to crime. This lot comprises thirty one letters or documents dated from 1703 to 1838 (plus a group of papers from about the 1790's relating to debtors held at Marshalsea Prison). Other items of interest in this lot include 1790's Order for Payment of £1000 to Thomas Lord Bishop of Chichester signed by various persons including John Aislabie who as Chancellor of the Exchequer was a strong supporter of the arrangement whereby the South Sea Company covered the national debt in exchange for government bonds (The South Sea Company collapsed just three months after this Order was issued). There is also a list of Grand Jury members dated 1781 and another jury list of 1790; letters relating to highway robbery and debts; a statement of 1787 concerning a deserter; a pardon of a military officer made on the 26th October 1712 headed Anne R and signed Bolingbroke (Viscount St John); a document of 1703 regarding a scandalous and blasphemous libel by Thomas Emlin; an arrest warrant of 1784; an entire letter with the Bishop mark dated 1749; a 1721 Statement by Samuel Simpson relating to smuggling and a letter of 1782 similarly on smuggling; a 1798 letter from a prisoner in Newgate making a final plea for clemency a few hours before his execution for high treason. Much else of interest. -
