BODIN, Jean. Les six livres de la republique , Lyon: Gabriel Cartier, 1593 [bound with:] Ren HERPIN [i.e. Jean Bodin], Apologie ... pour la republique de I. Bodin , Lyon: Cartier, 1594. 2 works in one volume, 8, woodcut device on each title, woodcut initials and headpieces, with the final blank (occasional very light waterstaining, a few light spots in the second work), 17th-century sprinkled calf (head and tail of spine chipped, slight damage in 2 compartments, rubbed). Bodin's work, first published in 1576, was "the first modern attempt to create a complete system of political science" (PMM). The second work is Bodin's own apology, written under the pseudonym of Ren Harpin, for his work as well as his ideas for reforming the currency. Tchemerzine II, 237.
