Book of Hours. Use of Paris, in Latin and French.
illuminated manuscript on vellum . [France, ?Paris, mid-15th century]. 121 x 92 mm. 146 + 1 leaves. Probably lacking a few miniatures. 14 lines (Calendar in 17 lines), written in dark brown ink in textura, between 2 verticals and 15 horizontals ruled in faint red, justification: 85 x 60 mm., rubrics in red, one- and two-line initials and line-fillers in gold on red and blue grounds with white tracery, eighteen three-line illuminated initials in blue or red patterned with white on burnished gold grounds with foliate or floral infill, ten with burnished gold three-sided bar-borders and accompanying three-quarter page borders with hairline tendrils terminating in burnished gold disks and trefoils and tiny leaves and flowers in green, blue, red and yellow, the remaining eight accompanying eight large arch-topped miniatures within single-ruled gold frames surrounded by full page-borders of similar decoration. Later calf (broken). Condition : most of the miniatures rubbed in places, three badly abraded, borders cropped throughout.
