Autograph letter signed to Thomas Coutts, founder of the banking house of Coutts & Co.
Auchinleck: 3 September 1787. 1½ pp., folded sheet (225 x 190 mm). Addressed to "Thomas Coutts Esq:" on the integral address sheet. Condition : folds, seal hole, original wax seal intact. Provenance : James Boswell/ Auchinleck (pencil inscription to address sheet); Eric Sexton, F.S.A., Christie's New York, 22 May 1981, lot 42. A cordial invitation to visit Auchinleck: "Understanding that you and Mrs. Coutts and Miss Fanny are to be at our worthy friend Colonel Cranfurd's, I write this letter to let you know that though my wife and I are here but for a short time, as if in goats whey quarters, so that we cannot entertain you so well as we would wish to do, we should be exceedingly sorry not to be favoured with a visit…" Not in Tinker; together with an autograph fragment in Boswell’s hand, lettered Earl of Lonsdale.
