The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Comprehending an Account of His Studies and Numerous Works
London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1793. 4 volumes. 8vo (210 x 130 mm). Frontispiece and two folding plates. The third edition, revised and augmented. Contemporary full red straight grained morocco, covers ruled and paneled in gilt, spines with 5 raised bands, gilt tooling and lettering, a.e.g., housed in two custom boxes. Condition: darkening, offset from portrait to title, dampstaining to final leaves of vol. 1 and 3; some soiling to covers and rubbing to spines, light rubbing to corners. Provenance: Bennet Langton to Bryan Waller (gift inscription to ffee). presentation copy from bennet langton a close friend of dr. johnson and a contributor to boswell's life. Langton first encountered Johnson while contributing to The Rambler, soon friends, Langton would attend to Johnson during his final illness, and was included in his will. Langton suceeded Johnson as professor in ancient literature at the Royal Academy after his death. an important association.
