London: William Savage for John Booth, '1810' [some plates watermarked 1811]. 2 parts in one volume, 2° (475 x 325mm). Engraved frontispiece by T. Overton, and 53 hand-coloured aquatint plates by J. Clark after Bradford and H. Michel. (Occasional light spotting, some light offsetting, mainly from plates onto text.) Contemporary diced russia gilt, boards with large diamond-shaped panels, gilt-ruled borders with cornerpieces, turn-ins gilt, spine gilt in compartments, gilt edges (extremities rubbed and scuffed, skilful repairs to corners, rebacked retaining original spine, modern gilt morocco lettering-pieces). Provenance : gilt marquess' crest in lower compartment of spine. FIRST EDITION, second issue, with the sectional title to Sketches of Military Costume in Spain and Portugal also dated 1810, the plates watermarked 1811, and the text watermarked 1809. Bradford was Chaplain of Brigade to the Expedition and his Sketches of Portugal and Spain , which was first published in some 24 parts between 1809 and 1810, enjoyed great popularity in the immediate aftermath of the Peninsula War, with further issues following in 1812, 1813 and 1823.
