Lot of 7 collodion negatives of U.S. Presidents and First Ladies, produced by Mathew Brady, including the following: 2 half-plate exposures on same plate of Dolley Madison; 1 whole-plate exposure and 2 half-plate exposures on same plate of Mrs. U.S. Grant; 1 whole-plate exposure of Rutherford B. Hayes with his sons; 1 whole-plate exposure and 1 half-plate exposure of Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes; and 2 half-plate exposures on same plate of James Garfield The collodion negatives attributed to Mathew Brady that are featured in this auction, lots 259-264, were acquired from an old Virginia photography collection that was amassed between the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the negatives are accompanied by the original envelopes in which they were housed, and include both inscriptions and a numbering system that was utilized by Brady. In addition, the Bembe & Kimbel chair that was often used in Brady's studio photographs is present in some of the negatives. Condition: Mrs. U.S. Grant, crack in top right corner of both negatives; R.B. Hayes, some loss of emulsion on plate; Mrs. Hayes, top portion of negative broken; James Garfield top portion of plate broken.
