BRAHMS, Johannes (1833-1897). Autograph letter signed ('J. Br.') to his publisher, Fritz Simrock, [Vienna, 27 December 1880], 3 pages, 8vo , on a bifolium. Provenance : Rudolf Serkin (see lot 58). A CONTRETEMPS WITH SIMROCK. Brahms thanks his publisher warmly for a box of wine: 'I would quietly accept it as a tribute of your joy and gratitude -- if it weren't for your last letter, and if I could believe that you were overjoyed that Peters had relieved you of a burden'. Brahms goes on to discuss the subject of the dispute, the fact that he had consigned his arrangement of the Sechs Duette von Händel to Peters in Leipzig, explaining that 'When I spoke to him in Leipzig, I only mumbled somewhat in my beard about the duets and other things. He was certainly most gratified -- but I am not sure what stayed in my beard and what he actually heard', going on to downplay the importance of the matter, and looking forward to talking to Simrock about this and other things, including Dvorak's 6th Symphony.
