Beschreibung:

BRAHMS, Johannes (1833-1897). Concerto(no.2, B dur) für Pianoforte mit Begleitung des Orchesters ... Op. 83 Bearbeitung für zwei Pianoforte . Berlin: N. Simrock, 1882. 4° (335 x 265). Lithographed throughout. Contemporary wrappers (disbound, some wear to corners and margins). FIRST EDITION, EXTENSIVELY REVISED AND ANNOTATED IN AUTOGRAPH and in other hands to form the Stichvorlage of the edition for piano solo, n.d. [early 1882], the annotations in pencil by Brahms, in pencil and blue crayon by Robert Keller ( Hauslektor at Simrock), and in red crayon and red pen by other hands, Brahms's annotations to every page, including cancelling or highlighting of parts throughout, together with approximately 25 brief musical passages or phrases, a considerable number of annotations ('blos Pf.I', 'Pf.II', 'rechte Hand unten'), as well as three substantial marginal instructions to Keller ( 'Hrn: Keller (im 3t System mit oder ohne 8vo wie es für d. Einrichtung bequem!)'), with responses and other comments by Keller and others, some referring to 'Beilage A [to F]' (no longer present). BRAHMS'S OWN RE-WORKING OF HIS PIANO CONCERTO NO.2 FOR PIANO SOLO. Brahms's second piano concerto, op. 83, was written in the summer of 1881 and first performed in Budapest in November of that year. It was first published by Simrock in January 1882 in the edition for two pianos which forms the basis of the present manuscript. There are a number of layers of annotations, but it appears that the initial contribution is Brahms's own, running through the entire text, and indicating, predominantly, how the two piano lines are to be resolved into a single part; these corrections are then taken up by the Simrock house editor, Keller, who clarifies and systematises; an annotation in his hand on the title page requests a proof copy of the revised work. The edition for piano solo was published in July of the same year (Margit McCorkle. Johannes Brahms: Thematisch-bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis . Munich 1984 p.343 ff). Closely related to this item is a single-leaf fragment in the British Library (Zweig MS 19) of an autograph draft of the tutti passages shared between both pianos in the two-piano edition, reduced for piano solo for use in the one-piano edition -- almost certainly one of the 'Beilagen' referred to in the text. The Second Piano Concerto is one of Brahms's masterpieces and amongst the greatest, and most difficult, of the romantic piano concertos. The autograph score is in the Brahms-Archiv in the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek in Hamburg.
