Deux œuvres de l'artiste sont proposées dans la présente vente aux enchères : la peinture figurative à grande échelle sur bois, Now and Then VI, réalisée en 2008 et la série de seize panneaux en aluminium qui composent The Battle of the Tenses, ex (2008). Ces deux œuvres faisaient partie de l'exposition personnelle de l'artiste, Crocodile Tears, présentée à la Goodman Gallery de Johannesburg en 2009. L'exposition explorait les mauvais usages de l'influence politique à travers le retraitement par Murray d'une imagerie historique appropriée. Through his provocative artistic practice, South African artist Brett Murray interrogates the interrelationships between political systems, social norms, and identity. Two works by the artist are offered in the present auction: the large-scale figurative painting on wood, Now and Then VI (2008) and the series of sixteen aluminium panels that comprise The Battle of the Tenses (2008). Both works were included in the artist's solo exhibition, Crocodile Tears, when it was presented at Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg in 2009. The exhibition explored misuses of political influence through Murray's reworking of appropriated imagery from history. Meditating on the power dynamics of colonialism, the works in the exhibition mapped a shift in power perceived by the artist from the oppressor to the oppressed. The Battle of the Tenses epitomises Murray's inventive approach to the subject. The set of crest-like images echo European heraldic emblems, representing a new imagined symbolic order that undermines historical seats of power. Since graduating from the University of Cape Town with a Master's of Fine Art in 1988, Murray has exhibited his work extensively within South Africa and abroad. His influence on the artistic landscape of South Africa is significant, both as artist and educator. In the early 1990s, he established the sculpture department at the University of Stellenbosch, where he curated the important show Thirty Sculptors from the Western Cape (1992). In 1999, in collaboration with influential artists including Lisa Brice and Sue Williamson he co-founded Public Eye, a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing public art in Cape Town.
