Title: Brief Account of the Experiences of James Meikle Sharp Author: Sharp, James Meikle Place: [Saticoy, CA?] Publisher: Date: 1931 Description: 72 pp. Double tipped-in frontispiece portraits. (8vo) original brown morocco with gilt calf label on front. First Edition. One of the rarer overland narratives, dictated late in life by the author and clearly intended for limited distribution to family and friends and describing his 1852 trip to Oregon. Bibliographer Merrill Mattes writes, "This is the migration record of a respectable but poor family that had to sacrifice and borrow to get their outfit together and were near starvation in Oregon." The narrative also gives a brief account of the author's later life in Lane County, Oregon, and Ventura County, California, where he eventually prospered as a citrus fruit grower and banker. Howes S339; Mattes 1279. Only a single copy in recent auction records (PBA, July 2012) but that copy in red cloth. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine leather dry and chipped, edges lightly rubbed; very good. Item number: 278397a
