Beschreibung:

.577 caliber. 39" round barrel secured by three rounded screw clamping bands. NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle musket. Lock marked in two lines forward of the hammer 1861 / TOWER and with the British Crown at the tail without a "VR" underneath. Left breech with Birmingham commercial proof, view and definitive proof marks as well as a pair of 25 gauge marks, indicating .577 caliber. Obverse stock with Bentley & Playfair makers roundel. Retains correct pattern 900-yard ladder rear sight, musket style combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and both sling swivels. Bands retain their doughnut shaped protectors on the ends of the screws. Retains an original, full-length jag head ramrod with good threads at the end that is marked T&C / GILBERT. Includes an original nipple protecting "snap cap" with correct pattern brass chain. A very nice condition example of a commercial Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket by one of the major Birmingham gun makers. The Enfield was the second most used long arm of the American Civil War. The gun shows no markings to indicate whether or if it was used by the North or South during the war, but is a great representative example for any serious Civil War arms collection with a desirable makers mark and the even more desirable production date of 1861. Condition: Very good to fine. Retains no finish, and was probably "struck to bright" during the period of use or immediately after the war. Metal with a dulling steel gray patina and scattered areas of freckled oxidation and age discoloration. Markings remain clear throughout. Mechanically functional. Very good bore with strong rifling and moderate oxidation. Stock fine and crisp with clear markings, showing only some lightly scattered bumps and dings.
