.577 caliber. 39" round barrel secured by three rounded screw clamping bands. SN: NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle musket. Lock marked in two lines forward of the hammer 1862 / TOWER and with the British Crown at the tail without a "VR" underneath. Left breech with Birmingham commercial proof, view and definitive proof marks as well as a pair of 25 gauge marks, indicating .577 caliber. Retains correct pattern 900-yard ladder rear sight, musket style combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and both sling swivels. Bands missing the doughnut shaped protectors on the ends of the screws. Retains an original, full-length jag head ramrod with good threads at the end. A very nice condition example of a commercial Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Musket that was the second most used long arm of the American Civil War. The gun shows no markings to indicate whether, or if, it was used by the North or South during the war, but is a great representative example for any serious Civil War arms collection. Condition: Fine. Retains some thinning and fading blue on the barrel with a streaky appearance, which is blending with a tobacco brown and plum patina. Lock with a similar tobacco brown color. Markings clear, mechanically functional, very good bore with strong rifling and moderate oxidation. Stock lightly cleaned with retaining good edges and lines, with fine wood to metal fit with the exception of the lock which is slightly proud of the mortise at the rear. Otherwise wood with some lightly scattered minor bumps and dings.
