BRUNO MATHSSON LOUNGE CHAIR FOR KARL MATHSSON Signed and dated 1938 (label to underside), Model 36 (designed 1933-1936), the woven webbing seat with canvas and leather headrest on shaped plywood supports united by stretchers. Height 75cm, Width 52cm, Depth 100cm PROVENANCE: Karl Mathsson, Värnamo 1938 Private Collection, Sweden Bukowskis Auction House, Sweden Private Collection, Southern Highlands OTHER NOTES: Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was a Swedish designer and architect who was self-taught, his designs experimented with curves and height and were often driven by function. He developed his own technique for bending wood which became a feature in many of his most notable designs. Model 36 was the first chair he designed purely for relaxation and was first advertised in 1937.
