BUFFON, Goerges-Louis-Marie le Clerc, comte de (1707-1788). Les planches enlumines, being coloured plates of some of the Birds mentioned in Buffon's Natural History, ... done under the direction of Mr. Daubenton . Paris: Panckoucke, 1765-1783]. 5 volumes, 2 (465 x 325mm). 1008 FINE ENGRAVED PLATES COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, by Franois Nicolas Martinet and P. de La Fert after Martinet under the supervision of Edm Louis Daubenton the younger, comprising 973 plates of birds and 35 of butterflies and insects. Contemporary manuscript title added to volume I, contents and index leaves to each volume, the bird plates with identifications and Buffon volume and page number reference written in the same hand. (A few short marginal tears.) Contemporary English red straight-grained morocco, sides tooled with single gilt fillet, gilt spine tooled with neo-classical ornament or leafy cartouche, green leather spine label, marbled endpapers, gilt spine (small stain on one volume, a few minor scuffs). Provenance : Joseph Cator (armorial bookplate); J. F. Symons-Jeune (armorial bookplate). A SUPERB SET OF THE LARGE-FOLIO ISSUE OF THE COLOURED PLATES intended to illustrate the bird volumes of Buffon's great Histoire Naturelle Gnrale . In 1765 Edm-Louis Daubenton, at Buffon's instigation, began the publication of 1008 plates, 973 of birds and 35 of butterflies and insects, in 42 parts, each part containing 24 plates. They were issued without title or text (save for an identification in French) but, as Zimmer notes, appear always to have been known as 'Daubenton's Planches Enlumines', as they are titled in the present volume. The 'planches enlumines' in fact never accompanied the edition for which they were intended, owing to the small number produced, although Buffon did issue a special edition of the Histoire naturelle des Oiseaux to accommodate Daubenton's plates. THIS COPY THUS REPRESENTS THE WORK IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM, ISSUED WITHOUT TEXT. It is considerably rarer than the issue with text; only one other copy (the small-folio issue) has been sold at auction in recent decades. A contemporary owner, presumably Joseph Cator, whose armorial bookplate adorns the front pastedown and for whom it was handsomely bound, provided a manuscript title, contents page, index, and captions to the bird plates. The Planches Enluminses is accompanied here by Tegetmeier's reprint of Boddaert's Table , 'an exceedingly rare work of 1783' (Zimmer), which Boddaert had prepared for his own use and then printed in an edition of 50 copies only. Cf. Zimmer pp.104-106, and p.63; Fine Bird Book , p.90. BODDAERT, Pieter. Reprint of Boddaert's Table des Planches Enluminez d'Histoire Naturelle . Edited by W.G. Tegetmeier. London: for the editor, [1874]. 8 (244 x 154mm). Contemporary half polished calf (spine worn, upper hinge broken). Provenance : J.F. Symons-Jeune (bookplate). (6)
