BUFFON, G.-L.-M. LECLERC, comte de. and others. Histoire naturelle, générale et particuliére, avec la description du cabinet du roi. Nouvelle edition. (I-XXXVIII.) Paris (Impremiere Royale) 1774-1802. Large 4to (276x208). 1 engraved frontispiece portrait of Buffon, titles with engraved vignettes, 941 engraved plates (lacking plate 15 to vol. II of Poissons), and 8 engraved maps to "Mineraux". Contemporary half leather, gilt spines with titles, partly faded, yellow edges. About 5 volumes dampstained and with damages mostly to covers, 1 volume (Oiseaux vol. 9) restored and rebacked (partly damaged), some volumes partly loose in binding. About 5 volumes with major dampstains and damages due to damp in the text and some plates (see below), otherwise some dampstaining, spotting, a few notes to margins, 1 page with tear, a few pages browned, some pages partly loose, 1 corner repaired, Titels with signature of C. G. Schwerin, his notes on inside of cover of one volume, dated 1836. A few owner's stamp on verso of title. Bookplate of Brita Ferner. 36 volumes. Nissen 672. The work is divided as follows: General I-VI (1774-79) - 41 plates (16 dampstained, not the animal plates), 1 folding plate dampstained). Quadrupèdes I-VIII (1777-89) - 440 plates (some dampstained in vol. II, some spotting). Ovipares et serpents I-II (1788-89) - 65 plates (2 large folding stained). Mineraux I-V (1783-88) - 8 folding maps (some spotting). Poissons I-V (1798-1803) - 117 plates (lacking 1 plate 15 in vol. II). Cétacées (1804) - 16 plates (dampstains). Oiseaux I-IX (1770-1783) - 262 plates. Provenance: Carl Gustaf von Schwerin (1769-1855), chamberlain, baron; castle of Hjularöd, (south of Sweden). Most probably sold at Libris Auction of Beatelund, in 1972, catalogue number 1, lot nb 18. Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return.
