Pratt Provenance : Cardiff Castle bookplate. Second edition of this continuation of the Pilgrim's Progress , by 'T. S.', whose initials appear at the end of the author's apology. Sharrock suggests that he was Thomas Sherman, "a General Baptist who set out to improve both Bunyan's theology and his literary manners." At no stage does Sherman claim that the work is Bunyan's - no author's name appears on the title page - and Sherman appears merely to have wished "to counteract the alleged 'frivilous' character of First Part" (Harrison). In his apology, Sherman states that his work is intended as a "Supplyment, or a Second Part" to the original work. In the British Library copy, as in the present copy, quire * is bound between A1 and A2: in the Southey copy it was bound at the end of the volume. The spurious second part was first published in 1682 and continued to be published until 1736. Copies of the early editions are rarely found in good condition.
