Contemporary wrappers, uncut (upper wrapper lacking). FIRST EDITION. After his surrender at Saratoga (1777) General Burgoyne and some of his officers and men were confined as prisoners of war at Cambridge, Massachusetts. Colonel David Henley, a hot-tempered man who was in immediate charge of the prisoners, was charged by Burgoyne with vindictive severity towards the prisoners, to the point of murder. General Heath ordered the court-martial, and Burgoyne conducted his own case. Henley was aquitted on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The work was reprinted in London in the same year.
