After his surrender at Saratoga (1777) General Burgoyne and some of his officers and men were confined as prisoners of war at Cambridge, Massachusetts. Colonel David Henley, a hot-tempered man who was in immediate charge of the prisoners, was charged by Burgoyne with vindictive severity towards the prisoners, to the point of murder. General Heath ordered the court-martial, and Burgoyne conducted his own case. Henley was aquitted on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The work was reprinted in London in the same year.
