BURTON, Richard Francis A New System of Sword Exercise for Infantry , London: William Clowes and Sons, 1876. 8° (180 x 115mm). Half title, wood engraved illustrations and diagrams. Original red cloth pictorial gilt (a little ink staining). With a 2p. letter, loosely inserted, from Burton to Captain Low on sword exercises stating: 'You know the single-stick was never my favourite weapon, and in handling it I always considered it a "derogation". My system of point will be out before very long; it is a mixture of French and Italo-Spanish schools which ought to make a sensation among swordsmen' (this letter is quoted in part by Georgiana Sisted in her biography of Burton, London, 1896, pp. 67-68). Penzer p.93: 'very rare'. With 5 other books on sword exercises comprising George McClellan's Manual of Bayonet Exercise: prepared for the use of the Army of the United States. (Philadelphia: 1862, 24 plates), By His Majesty's Command ... Rules and Regulations for the Sword Excercise of the Cavalry. (London: 1796, 29 engraved plates, 27 of which are folding), McClellan's Manual of Bayonet Excercise (Philadelphia, 1852), Henry C. Wayne's The Sword Excercise (Washington, 1850), and J. Corbesier's Principles of Squad Instruction for the Broadsword (Philadelphia, 1869). (6)
