Folding aquatint frontispiece, 3 engraved portraits, 8 aquatint plates after Robert Dampier one plan of Kilauea volcano, one folding map and one woodcut (frontispiece reinforced along inner margin, some occasional light browning and staining, mostly marginal). (Repaired tear to lower margin of Q1 not affecting text, some very light dampstaining.) Contemporary speckled calf (skilfully rebacked to match, the spine with gilt ship tools and morocco lettering pieces). FIRST EDITION OF BYRON'S JOURNEY TO RETURN THE BODIES OF KING KAMEHAMEHA II AND QUEEN KAMAMALU TO HAWAII. The king and queen had visited London in 1824 where they tragically died of the measles, for which they had no immunity. The voyage, described by Sir Peter Buck as "one of the most gracious acts that one country has ever extended to another" (Forbes), was commissioned by the British government with Byron in command. This narrative contains a history of the king's visit to London, descriptions of the exploration of Hawaii by the British, as well as a main account compiled by Maria Graham, a cousin of Captain Byron's, from official papers and journals kept by officers and men on board the Blonde .
