c.1925 HISPANO-SUIZA H6B SKIFF TORPEDO COACHWORK BY ANSART AND TEISSEIRE Chassis No. 10854 Engine No. 300876 Red with black fenders and brown leather upholstery Engine: six cylinder, in -ine, 6,597cc, 135bhp at 3,000rpm; Gearbox: three speed manual, dry plate clutch; Brakes: four wheel mechanically operated drum, Hispano-Suiza mechanical servo assistance; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear. Right hand drive. The H6B Hispano-Suiza, launched at the 1919 Paris salon was to set the standard of automotive design and engineering that other manufacturers strived to equal. Hispano-Suiza's policy of producing only one model provided the highest degree of quality control and at the same time enabled detailed improvements based on experience and customer suggestions: By the late 1920's the H6B had been in production almost ten years and yet its advanced technology was still superior to its immediate competitors. The six cylinder engine provided superb power coupled to a taut chassis that was very responsive and a unique engine-powered servo system for the four-wheel brakes. This model was a favorite car for the wealthy sporting motorist and its success in competitions became legendary. Marc Birkigt, the outstanding engineer who was responsible for every Hispano-Suiza design from 1904 to 1938, had but one prime principle, quality above all else , which his cars certainly achieved. It was the detail in the building of an H6B, like the machining of the huge crankshaft from a steel billet and the way the steel cylinder sleeves were screwed into the light alloy cylinder block from below, that made it so remarkable. The mechanical servo assistance to the brakes was so good that Rolls-Royce finally adopted it for their cars. This stunning H6B carries exquisite original skiff coachwork by Ansart and Teisseire, a little known yet respected Parisian coachbuilder. Original skiff bodied cars are rare indeed and this example has many attractive features including a dual rear cowl with a hinged compartment for a fully disappearing top. The long, sweeping wings are adorned with twin side mounted spares which flow into the running boards, which also serve as a tool compartment. While very little is known about the early history of this Hispano, it must have been very well cared for and seen little use since it is in remarkably good and original condition. The beautifully finished upholstery has a lovely patina and may even be the original material fitted to car when new. For the last thirty years, the car has been part of an exclusive collection in the American Northeast. Although unused for many years, last year the engine was carefully inspected by a qualified mechanic. It was determined to have very little wear and following re-assembly the car was run without fault in September. While offered very much as a driver, this magnificient car, if restored to Pebble Beach standards would be outstanding. Either way it is one of the finest original touring cars we have had the pleasure of offering built by one of the leading manufacturers coupled with one of the most respected coachbuilders of the day. There is an active Hispano-Suiza Society who organize various events, spares and technical information and a quarterly newsletter.
