In the 1950s, BSA (Birmingham Small Arms) was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, and they provided a wide range of machines for all needs. The 500cc A50 and the 650cc A65 were BSA's entry into the performance bike, vertical twin category from 1962 to 1968. Almost 60,000 were made in various trim and tuning levels. These twins, with gearbox within the engine case, were well received in the motorcycling press for their smooth power, sure-footed handling and, in later years, exceptional braking. The higher-performance models also made their mark in production racing, and an earlier BSA twin had won the Daytona 200, Americas premier race. This example is a twin-carburetor A65 Lightning from the 1967 production run. It features late model year improvements including finned rocker covers, a single 12-volt battery, improved fork damping, the desirable Amal concentric carburetors with separate air cleaners and the styling provided by the small U.S. market tank. It is also fitted with the 8-inch twin leading shoe brake that was introduced near the end of the 1967 model run. The 1967-68 A10 twins are considered to be the last of the classic BSA twins because their new triple, introduced in 1968, would become the performance BSA and the last twins before BSA went out of business tended more toward grand touring than pure performance. This BSA Lightning was gone through by well-known craftsman, Dave Wedlake, and has a new tank in the proper candy apple red as well as new cables and tires. It was purchased by the vendor in 2000 in good running condition and has been stored since. This bike presents an opportunity to own a classic bike from the golden era of British vertical twins. Please note, this motorcycle is titled as a model year 1970.
