Harley-Davidson-inspired ‘factory customs’ have been a feature of the Japanese manufacturers’ ranges since the late 1970s. Confined at first to larger models, they soon became available in all capacities, Yamaha’s offering in the 250 class being the SR250SE ‘Special’. The laid back, ‘cruiser’ riding position might have seemed a little odd on a machine as compact as this, but Bike magazine was well impressed by its long-term test example back in 1982: ‘Overall the SR exudes a nice, understated air of quality; all the trappings of big expensive machines are present and correct, the attention to detail is good and it’s a pleasure to ride, especially in town.’ Boasting electric-start convenience, an 80mph-plus top speed and frugal (68mpg) fuel consumption, the SR250SE was a deserved success. This example is offered without documents.
