Custom Winchester Highwall Pope Rifle. 32" round No. 4 weight barrel marked "H.M. POPE HARTFORD CONN". Breech and muzzleloading barrel in caliber .28-30 Stevens, Hartford Pope barrel number 142, no other Pope markings are visible under the forearm. Lyman globe front sight, telescope bases, and a Winchester mid-range Vernier tang sight complete this rifle's sighting equipment. Barrel is complete with a matching numbered false muzzle and brass bullet starter. Flat spring Winchester case colored action with a blued replaced Winchester pistol grip lower tang with double set triggers, early reblued Winchester spur lever. Winchester deluxe checkered pistol grip stock with Dutch cheekrest, Winchester hard rubber grip cap, and reblued Helm buttplate. Winchester standard grade walnut non-checkered forearm with Winchester palm rest base. This rifle comes with a very nice set of Pope reloading tools including a scarce double cavity .28-30 Hartford Pope bullet mold with cavities extensively and beautifully vented cavities by Mr. Pope. Other items include nickel-plated Pope re&de capping tool, Pope .28-30 bullet lubricating tool, and very desirable Pope duplex powder measure (missing its original drop tube). Other items include a box of 20 UMC .28-30 fired shells, Ideal reloading tool marked "28 STEVENS', "APW" marked newer bullet breech seating tool, a very interesting period-correct bullet swaging die, and various miscellaneous period accessories. A great outfit seldom found intact today. CONDITION: 90% faded barrel bluing with 90% faded case colors. 90% original stock varnish with usage marks and dings. Buttplate and spur lever have been reblued and have turned a purple. Pope's classic left-hand twist rifling with a bright bore showing noticeable shooting wear and good mechanics. Kit box is in good condition with a removable tray.
