Beschreibung:

ca 1870. Beaded in blues, greasy yellow, white, and red "white hearts" with a triangular pattern on one side, and geometric design on other. Handle made of hide wrapped with beads. Included is an old note stating, "Card case for carrying the issue cards made by Paddycap's sister. Paddycap is chief of the Pi Ute Indians in Nevada. He was one of the leaders in the Bannock war and was captured by General Crook." Length 4" x width 2.5", total length 18.5". The Paddy Cap band was arrested by US troops in 1872, where they were escorted to the Yakima Reservation in Washington. In 1884, they were released, placed under the leadership of Paddy Cap, and moved to a 20 x 6 mile addition to the Duck Valley Reservation. By this time, the Paddy Cap band's population had decreased by 40% due to malaria and measles. (See Sturtevant: 537.)
