(Some plates browned, occasional marginal dampstain, light spotting.) Original full mottled calf, the spines richly gilt in compartments with the crowned monogram of Louis XIV, red morocco title labels, and green morocco volume labels numbered 1-4, the sides centred with the royal arms in gilt, gilt edges (spine caps chipped, corners rubbed, some joints just starting, sides lightly scuffed). TREASURES OF VERSAILLES IN FRENCH ROYAL BINDING. Four volumes from this remarkable 'encyclopaedic showcase for the flourishing of the arts and sciences in the service of the French king', distributed by royal gift only (RIBA). This 1727 edition is the first published in a larger and uniform folio format, adding a number of plates to the 1679 edition which was issued separately in volumes of varying heights. There appears to be variation in the exact number of plates between copies; for instance, Brunet calls for 50 plates in Termes against the 51 in this copy and the RIBA copy.
