Original orange cloth (light darkening and leaning to spine); pictorial dust jacket (1/2 in. chip to foot of spine panel); cloth folding case. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY inscribed to Dr. Lackritz on front free endpaper: "To. Richard Lackritz With best regards and the hope he enjoys it James M. Cain Hyattville, Md. June 30, 1977." -- [ Laid in ]: Typed letter signed by Cain to Dr. Lackritz dated March 6, 1977 regarding autographing books that have been mailed to him. "As a matter of curiosity, what did you have to pay for a first edition of my Postman, if you don't mind telling me? For various reasons, it was selling very big at one time -- the publisher had no confidence in the book, and only put out a small printing, many of which got damage within a few days."
