Title: ''California'' [photograph album] Author: Southern Pacific Company Place: [California] Publisher: Southern Pacific Company Date: [c. 1920's] Description: With 50 silver photographs printed on 50 leaves of thick sensitized paper, on rectos only, as issued by the Southern Pacific [Railroad] Company, with their "compliments" gilt-stamped imprint on the bottom front leather turn-in. Most images measure 6x9". (Oblong) 10x13¾, original pebbled calf, front cover stamped in gilt "California." Spectacular and handsome photograph album, showing many of scenic wonders in California, presumably taken along the Southern Pacific Railroad routes during the 1920’s, and thus presented as a gift to only a select few. Places represented include: Mt. Shasta, San Francisco, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park (including the old Dutch Windmill), University of California Berkeley, Santa Clara Valley, Mission San Juan de Bautista, Laguna Del Rey – Del Monte, Cypress Tree on the Seventeen Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, Paso Robles, Mission San Miguel, Ruined Arch at Mission Santa Ynez, Point Concepcion, Mission Santa Barbara, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mt. San Bernardino in Redlands, Mission San Luis Rey Palm Canyon near Palm Springs, High Sierra from Yosemite Valley (also El Capitan, Half Dome, Nevada Falls, North Dome, Yosemite in Winter), The Sentinel and Wawona – Mariposa Big Tree Grove, Lake Tahoe, Desolation Valley, Mountain Lake at the Base of Mt. Whitney, The Whaleback on trail to Kern River Canyon (circular shaped image), and Last Vidette – Bubbs’ Creek near Kings River Canyon. Each photograph captioned in the bottom margin, printed from hand-lettering. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild rubbing and slight fading chiefly to margins, scattered nicks, top of joints splitting; occasional faint marginal finger-soiling, otherwise contents clean and intact; very good to near fine.
