FIRST EDITION of this rare Pacific voyage to China and Japan, edited by James Smith to benefit Campbell who had "returned to his native country in April 1812, having lost both his feet " (preface p.8) from frostbite after his shipwreck on the Eclipse and his journey in a long boat along the coast of Alaska to Kodiak. Campbell was sent to Hawaii to recover from his injuries, and lived there from January 1809 to March 1810. "The author lived among the chiefs and then with Isaac Davis, and he identifies some of the earliest foreign residents of the islands, a number of whom were Botany Bay men. His keen firsthand observations on the social structure and agricultural practices of Hawaiians are of great importance" (Forbes). The work includes a 29-page vocabulary with 3 pages of dialogues useful to sailors. The map depicts the "Track of the Eclipse's Long Boat from Sannack to Kodiak."
