[Carey's American Atlas: containing Twenty Maps and One Chart.] [Philadelphia: Matthew Carey, 1795/1796.] 21 double-page engraved maps by Samuel Lewis and Amos Doolittle most with imprint reading "Engraved for Careys American edition of Guthrie's Geography improved." Folio (427 x 274 mm). Period quarter sheep and marbled boards. Custom blue chemise and slipcase. Some offsetting, foxing and browning throughout, lacking letterpress title, binding weak and very rubbed. THE FIRST AMERICAN ATLAS ENGRAVED AND PUBLISHED IN AMERICA. It contains seventeen separate maps of American states or provinces, plus a map of the western British possessions, of South America, and charts of the West Indies and of Cook's discoveries on the northwest coast. The map of Virginia is the first separate map of that state published. The present atlas has the map of Tennessee in a later state, reading "Tennassee State" rather than "Tennassee Government." Howes C135; Evans 28390; Phillips 1362; Sabin 10855; Schwartz & Ehrenberg 215. Provenance: period gift inscription from Owen Jones to Cornelius Smith on flyleaf; inscription of Elizabeth Smith on upper cover. [SOLD WITH]: Another copy. This one with letterpress title page dated 1795, but with only 8 maps present, all hand-colored in outline. Folio (377 x 234 mm). Period quarter sheep and marbled boards. Custom red chemise and slipcase. Browned with some stains and fold-splitting, binding coming loose. The maps present are "The British Possessions in North America," "The Province of Maine," "The State of Massachusetts," "The State of Rhode Island," "The State of New Jersey," and "A Chart of the West Indies." Acquisition: Siebert sale, Sotheby's New York, May 21, 1999, lot 214 (the pair), $28,750.
