CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HIDALGUIA, issued by Carlos III, King of Spain, in favour of Bartholome de Iruegas y Sotomayor and his son Gaspar Antonio de Iruegas Barcena y Gil y Sotomayor. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM AND PAPER. [Madrid, 15 December 1783] 280 x 193mm. in two sections: 168 paper leaves (including one initial and one final blank) + 76 vellum leaves (including 2 folding leaves). Paper part: on pale green paper (except for the first three and the penultimate two leaves, which are white paper), 18 lines, written in brown ink in an italic hand, three horizontal brown ink rules below the text on each page, a notary's endorsement in the lower margin of each recto. 10 HISTORIATED INITIALS, each consisting of a gold capital superimposed on a landscape scene and accompanying two or three lines of display script, 4 WATERCOLOUR CARTOUCHES containing section openings in gold capitals, PEN-DRAWN PORTRAIT OF CARLOS III in a decorative watercolour frame (f.3v); embossed paper seal (paper detached) on f.3, papered wafer seal on penultimate verso. Vellum part: 18 lines, written in black ink in an italic script, each page encadrée with two sets of three red rules, a notary's endorsement in the lower margin of each recto, 34 HISTORIATED INITIALS, four or five lines, consisting of gold decoratative capitals superimposed on landscape scenes within gold frames, 8 COLOURED ORNAMENTAL CARTOUCHES containing section headings in gold capitals, 8 half-page coats of arms, CALLIGRAPHIC TITLE PAGE WITH ORNAMENTAL BORDER, 2 FULL-PAGE MINIATURES, 2 FOLDING GENEALOGICAL CHARTS, all illuminated in gold, silver, and colours; three papered wafer seals on the last two leaves; additionally, an illuminated coat of arms on a slip of paper (117 x 96mm) laid in. Original Spanish binding of red morocco gilt, all edges gilt, with 3 full and 16 half-page original pale blue-green silk interleaves, in the original pull-off case of mottled calf, the marbled paper lining of the case matching the endleaves of the book (extremities of the case slightly worn). The first part of the volume, on paper, consists of the carta executoria properly speaking. The second part, on vellum, gives the history of each branch of the family, illustrating the coat of arms for each, and showing the relationships in two genealogical tables on fold-out leaves. THE SUBJECTS OF THE FULL PAGE ILLUMINATIONS ARE: folio 1r. Title page: Libro que contiene la executoria y certification y despacho de armas de Don Gaspar Antonio de Ireugas Barcena y Gil y Sotomayor; Vecino de esta corte, y natural del lugar de Lorcio del M.N. y M.L. Valle de Tudela, scados in este presente ano de 1783 . folio 2r. Coat of arms with quarterings and crest. folio 3r. A seascape with a lion and symbols of war in the foreground, flanked by a crenellated tower and two crowned columns bearing the motto "Plus ultra"; above, an angel with a trumpet and a cupid supporting a wreath enclosing the armorial ink stamp of Carlos III; below, in a cartouche, the words "Don Juan Felix de Rujula", beginning a text that continues on the verso.
