CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HIDALGUIA, issued by Philip II, King of Spain, in favour of Donna Guiomar de Alarcon Ulloa, in Spanish, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Granada, 1 July 1593] 301 x 211mm. i + 45 leaves + ii (blank): 1 2, 2 1 2, 3-4 1 6, 34 lines written in a neat round bookhand in black and brown ink between two pairs of verticals and 35 horizontals ruled in mauve, justification: 238 x 137mm, each folio with notary's endorsement in lower margin and three decorative double rulings in upper margin, opening rubric in liquid gold with white tracery on blue ground, remaining rubrics in brown ink, LARGE OPENING HISTORIATED INITIAL with bust-length portrait of Philip II, sixteen large penwork initials, HALF-PAGE ARMORIAL WITH FULL-PAGE BORDER with divided ground of blue and liquid gold, with feather plumes, grotesque foliate decoration with masks and inscription 'Por Mas' in liquid gold lettering, FULL-PAGE ARCH-TOPPED MINIATURE of the recipients kneeling in prayer below the Virgin and Child seated on a hillock before kneeling shepherd with flock, with full-page floral border with urns and cartouches on liquid gold ground (first and final blanks once pasted to boards, f.2r stained with glue, a few wormholes, folios 1 & 2 detached). Old pasteboard covers, upper cover with incunable leaf forming the upper layer of pasteboard (boards detached and worn with remnants of glue, a few wormholes). Provenance : Diego de Torres (inscription to recto of f.1). A decorative carta executoria, issuing a patent of nobility in favour of Donna Guiomar de Alarcon Ulloa from the town of Jaén in Andalucia; the daughter of deceased parents Diego Fernandez de Ulloa and Donna Catalina de Quintana Ulloa, the Ulloa arms are represented in the half-page miniature on f.2v.
