Beschreibung:

CAVICEO, Jacopo (1443-1511) - Libro del peregrino diligentemente in lingua toscha correttto. Venice: Nicolo Zoppino, 1526. A fascinating copy in contemporary full leather binding with blindstamped and gilt decorations. 'Peregrino' is the only work in the vernacular composed by Caviceo; it is divided into 3 books, each of which is introduced by a woodcut vignette depicting the Pilgrim speaking "to Violante, Hacate and Theodoro". "A novel by the Parma priest Iacopo Caviceo, published in 1508. It is a "Boccaccio-like" story of the loves of two young people, Peregrino and Ginevra, which the author pretends to have heard (in three stages) from the shadow of the protagonist himself who appeared to him in a vision.. it is intriguing because of the numerous allusions to contemporary men and by the lubricity of several episodes. The work enjoyed very great popularity in its contemporary days and in half a century it was reprinted 19 times and translated into French and Castilian" (Diz. Opere Bompiani, IV, p. 394). 8vo (154 x 95mm). Large woodcut vignette on title, opening of the first book within an elaborate woodcut border, woodcut vignette at the beginning of each book (some light staining and soiling). Contemporary leather binding, titles within circular decorations on covers surrounded by a gilt and blindstamped border, spine divided in compartments with manuscript title, edges decorated in gilt and blindstamp (slightly loose and with light traces of restoration, the endpapers have been reinserted by an unexpert hand leaving a strip of paper glued to the front endpaper). Provenance: Giorgio Fanan (bookplate). The lot is accompanied by an export certificate (DVAL) valid until 30 September 2022.
