A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY OF A RARE OFFPRINT FROM THE MÉMOIRES OF THE ACADÉMIE ROYALE DES SCIENCES. In his memoir Chabert, lieutenant general in the Navy and hydrographer of note, discusses the use of sea-clocks and lists the calculations of longitude that he carried out during the North American campaigns of the Comtes d'Estaing and de Grasse using two of Ferdinand Berthoud's sea-clocks or chronometers. Together with Pierre Le Roy, Berthoud is credited with the development of the first modern marine chronometers. From 1768 to 1792, 24 sea voyages were made employing 50 of Berthoud's various sea-clocks. Offprints of memoirs presented at the various Académies were usually printed in very small editions for presentation to personnages of rank. This copy must have been bound in 1792 or 1793: the Comte d'Estaing was named Admiral by the National Assembly in 1792, but by 1794 his loyalty to Marie Antoinette caught up with him and he was executed in April by decree of the Tribunal Révolutionnaire.
