CHABERT, JOSEPH BERNARD DE, Marquis . Extrait des Mémoires de l'Académie Royale des Sciences, Pour l'Année 1783. Sur l'usage des Horloges marines, relativement à la Navigation, & sur-tout à la Géographie, où l'on détermine la différence en longitude de quelques points...par des Observations faites pendant la campagne de M. le Comte d'Estaing en 1778 & 1779, & celle de M. le Comte de Grasse en 1781 & 1782...Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale 1785. 20 pages, 4to, contemporary calf, covers gilt-panelled, WITH THE GILT-BLOCKED ARMS OF THE COMTE D'ESTAING AS ADMIRAL (Guigard II, p. 207), spine gilt, g.e., joints and corners worn, lower joint cracking, head of spine chipped with loss to leather, occasional very light marginal foxing . A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY OF A RARE OFFPRINT FROM THE MÉMOIRES OF THE ACADÉMIE ROYALE DES SCIENCES. In his memoir Chabert, lieutenant general in the Navy and hydrographer of note, discusses the use of sea-clocks and lists the calculations of longitude that he carried out during the North American campaigns of the Comtes d'Estaing and de Grasse using two of Ferdinand Berthoud's sea-clocks or chronometers. Together with Pierre Le Roy, Berthoud is credited with the development of the first modern marine chronometers. From 1768 to 1792, 24 sea voyages were made employing 50 of Berthoud's various sea-clocks. Offprints of memoirs presented at the various Académies were usually printed in very small editions for presentation to personnages of rank. This copy must have been bound in 1792 or 1793: the Comte d'Estaing was named Admiral by the National Assembly in 1792, but by 1794 his loyalty to Marie Antoinette caught up with him and he was executed in April by decree of the Tribunal Révolutionnaire. Provenance : Comte Charles Hector d'Estaing, as above.
