CHAGALL, Marc (1887-1985), artist — Nicolai GOGOL (1809-1852)
Les Âmes Mortes. Paris: Tériade, 1948.
Chagall’s first book collaboration with the renowned publisher Ambroise Vollard. The artist, who was born near Vitebsk in present-day Belarus, was introduced to printmaking in 1922, learning techniques he would use just a year later when illustrating Nikolai Gogol’s Les Âmes Mortes, a classic Russian-language novel. However, Vollard was a notorious perfectionist, leaving twenty-five unfinished projects at the time of his death in 1939, including Les Âmes Mortes. This exceptional pair of volumes was later completed in 1948 by Tériade, another of the great 20th-century publishers of illustrated books. Cramer books 17.
Two volumes, folio (381 x280mm). Number 247 of 401 copies, printed on Arches wove paper, signed by the artist, with ninety-six etchings. Loose as issued, stiff paper wrappers, with original glassine jackets, each volume housed in its original chemise of cream cloth backed boards labelled on spine, the whole contained in cream paper covered slip case; sold in original brown paper wrappers. Provenance: outer wrapper numbered 247 in crayon by publisher.
