According to Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar, Head of Collections & Charles Cary Rumsey Curator, Burchfield Penney Art Center, while there are no specific references to the subject of Twilight in Charles Burchfield's Journals, there are two excerpts from April and October that suggest plausible scenarios. Weekly notes that "On April 19, 1937, he wrote about land close to his home in Gardenville/West Seneca, New York. In his 'Notes on the Sulphur-Coal trip for Fortune' Burchfield chronicles his commissioned 12-day trip to create illustrations for an article in Fortune magazine about the chemical industry that took him to a sulfur mine in Texas and a coal mine in West Virginia in October 1937. In the drawing, Twilight, he depicts three bright lights on the horizon that are similar to how he represented lights in the Ohio coal mines and coke industries between 1917 and the early 1920s. The tall smokestack belching black smoke and row of rooftops suggest this may be a scene from Logan, West Virginia relayed in his entry from October 16, 1937. Interpretation is subjective, but it may be more plausible to believe that the drawing was made in Logan, West Virginia rather than in Western New York." (N.
