CHARLES DARWIN (1809-1882); WILLIAM ROSCOE (1753-1831); FRANCOIS RENÉ CHATEAUBRIAND (1768-1848); SIR JOHN HERSCHEL (1792-1871); THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919) & OTHERS A large album containing approximately 150 autograph letters and 50 clipped signatures. These include a 2-page autograph letter, signed, by Darwin, from Down, Sunday Morning, [n.d.], to his son William, informing him that two letters had arrived for him and that: "Poor Joseph came back last night, having had teeth out," a one-page autograph letter from William Roscoe, dated Lodge Lane, 1st June 1829, to Mr. Lawrence, alluding to his work "on Monandrian Plants," together with letters by Francois René Chateaubriand, Charles James Fox, William Wilberforce, Robert Peel Henry Brougham, J.B. Macauley, Isaac D'Israeli, John Gibson (including two pencil designs for a monument), Benjamin West Sabine Baring-Gould, Joseph Blanco White, a manuscript poem in three stanzas, signed by Sir John Herschel with his initials, a manuscript poem entitled "The May Tree" in 4 stanzas, signed and dated by Alfred Noyes, and two typed letters, signed, by Andrew Carnegie and Theodore Roosevelt. Clipped signatures include those of William Thackeray Jenny Lind, Queen Adelaide, George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (the majority tipped in or laid down).
