CHARLES-JOSEPH NATOIRE, STUDY FOR A PORTRAIT OF LOUIS, DAUPHIN OF FRANCE, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, BRUSH, GREY WASH, ON BLUE PAPER
Drawn with great vivacity on a sheet of blue paper, this study of a full-length figure staged with a torso column and a curtain in the background is to be related to the painted portrait of the crown prince Louis (1729-1765), son of Louis XV. Commissioned in 1746 for the prince’s new bedroom at Versailles, the painting is still in situ today (fig. 1; inv. MV. 3791; see S. Caviglia-Brunel, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), Paris, 2012, no. P181, ill.). There are two other related drawings in preparation for this painting: one with a composition very similar to the present sheet (in reverse compared to the painting), also on blue paper, is in the Musée Borély in Marseille (inv. 68.155; see op. cit., no. D. 395, ill.); the other, a more sketchy study of the Dauphin in full-length, is in the Musée Atger, Montpellier (inv. MA 44; see op. cit., no. D. 396, ill.).
