The theme of Venus and Adonis was treated several times by Natoire in paintings and drawings, as in two paintings preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes (inv. IP 2691) and in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (inv. 1989-3-2; see S. Caviglia-Brunel, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777), Paris, 2012, nos. P.165, P.166, ill.). In the present drawing, Venus from her chariot mourns the death of her beloved lying on the ground, surrounded by women. The initials ‘CN’ in the lower right corner are frequently used by the artist on his drawings.
