CHARLEVOIX, Pierre Francois Xavier de (1682-1761). Histoire de l'Isle Espagnole ou de S. Domingue . Paris: Francois Barois, 1730-1731. 2 volumes, 4 o (256 x 185 mm). 18 engraved maps and harbor plans, 15 of which are folding (a few short tears, some very minor offsetting). Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt, edges speckled (corners a bit bumped, joints cracking). Provenance : Koninkl. Bibliotheek Teshage (stamp on versos of titles); Aigeschaite Dubbelen (stamp on versos of titles); Bibliotheque Service Hydrographique (stamp on p. 100 of both volumes). FIRST EDITION. Charlevoix was a Jesuit priest who travelled to Santo Domingo by way of Quebec and New Orleans. He writes extensively about the history of Santo Domingo from 1492-1724, and includes detailed maps of the island, as well as Venezuala, Panama, and Vera Cruz.
