Charlie Chaplin/Monsieur Verdoux, 1946 A collection of ephemera largely compiled by Robert Florey between May 1946-May 1947 during his collaboration with Chaplin as associate director on the 1946 film Monsieur Verdoux , some included in a scrapbook, the flyleaf signed and inscribed in Florey's hand with a lengthy dedication in French to his friend Maurice Bessy in which he explains that all the photographs, documents, set and scene designs contained within the pages are unique, the contents of the scrapbook and another folio include: 17 graphite or ink rough direction and storyboard sketches in Chaplin's hand, two additionally annotated by Chaplin with various details; three costume sketches by Chaplin in graphite or coloured pencil including hat designs for Martha Raye's character Annabella Bonheur; a head and shoulders sketch of Charles Evans as Detective Morrow initialled C.C. and a costume design for Paulette Goddard's role in The Great Dictator , 1940 largest -- 9¼x8½in. (23.5x21.6cm.) ; approximately 56 black and white photographs taken by Florey during filming, the majority either -- 4x2.5in. (10.2x12.7cm.) or 2½x2½in. (6.3x6.3cm.) ; a page of mimeographed typescript from the first edition of the script, liberally annotated by Chaplin with deletions and corrections in pencil, black and blue ink; various other black and white photographs of Chaplin on various Hollywood sets, some in costume including a rare shot of Chaplin as Napoleon circa 1936 -- 8¾x6¾in. (22.3x17.2cm.) ; a black and white group photograph of a meeting of the independaet stars and producers in Hollywood in 1921 -- 7½x9¼ (18.3x23.5cm.) ; a pencil caricature of Robery Florey by Charlie Chaplin signed and dated Charlie Chaplin, July 10th, 1922; an autograph note, signed on Charles Chaplin Studios.... headed stationery, 1st July 1945, the note written in French thanking the French public for their support of his films, and annotated with a self-portrait 'Tramp' caricature; and related material (a lot)
