According to traditional Daoist belief, dragons are said to create the clouds with their breath, bringing life-giving rain to the people. Clouds are also a sign of the heavenly realms. The arrival of deities from the heavens is often said to be heralded by scrolling clouds created by the dragon's breath. The colors of the carpet were carefully chosen. The eight dragons have blue heads, which symbolizes immortality and advancement. Browns are reminiscent of earth. Water is represented by the color black in Chinese mythology. The symbols of this carpet evoke the elements of earth, water, and the heavenly realms. The design is arranged so that there is an opening on either end of the carpet, which one could imagine being used in an elevation ceremony of some type.
