Chinese Master Yang Shih-hui carved ivory vase

This elephant ivory was imported legally into the United States.) carved to depict two figures within a thatched-roofed pavilion on a lake shore with trees and distant mountains. The reverse a poem in raised calligraphy, "The Falling Leaves" by Kong Deshao; "Leaves were falling from the trees by early autumn. Gone with the wind like the mood of a guest. They fly high in the sky refusing to fall to the ground. They say they miss the forest where they came from." Signed by Master Yang Shui-hui. Yang Shih-hui, 1911-1987. Many of Yang's works have been kept in Chinese State Museums. His work is on permanent display at the United Nations. He was honored as one of the country's top ivory carvers and was praised by Chairman Mao Tse-tung as an "extraordinary artist". In 1979 he was granted the honorary title of "Handicraft Master" by China's Ministry of Light Industry. He is the only artist in ivory carving to be so awarded. Provenance: Estate of a Belgian national collector who lived and worked in mainland China from 1896 – 1948. 4.5" H, Circa - 1932-1949.
