CHINESE MILITARY MANOEUVRES A six-leaf double-leaf album, titled in characters Taiyi bagua zhentu ["A plan for the troops according to the eight-diagrams system of the Taiyi"], [19th century]. 2° (40 x 24cm). 1p. mounted manuscript text. 6 double-page watercolours, on thin paper mounted, five with explanatory text on red paper mounted on the upper left margin. (Some damage to centre-folds, some old dampstaining, light surface damage to final drawing, text leaf torn.) Original decorated limp cloth covers, manuscript title label on upper cover (soiled, light damage to label). An unusual finely detailed series of military watercolours by an unidentified chinese hand. The drawings are of symetical design and show various manoeuvres involving mortar-fire, hand-to-hand combat and a fusillade from one-man and two-man muskets.
