Postal Map of China. [Canton]: 1911. Colored lithographed map of the postal service routes around China, on thin paper, labelled appendix B. 630 x 940 mm. The map showing railway lines and postal courier routes, with 8 detailed insets of the postal services at the major hubs, titled and with index in English, but with the map entirely in Chinese characters. Margins with small tears, old fold lines with repaired tears. Provenance: Old library stamps of the China Mission of Cuba. The Customs Post Office of the Qing Empire was established by a Northern Irish official, Robert Hart in 1878, and developed into one of the most efficient postal services in S.E. Asia. In 1911 the Postal Service became independent of the Customs Service. This map being from an official report from that time. In 1912 the Postal Service morphed again and started using airline services for long range distribution rather than railways.
